Take a virtual exhibition tour, download our coloring pages, explore our digital collection, or share your thoughts about a favorite Goldstein Museum of Design object. Web visitors can now take a walk through time and graphic design with the Join & Give page’s new link to over 12 years of GMD members’ magazines and newsletters. See how GMD’s graduate student graphic designers have influenced the design of this important member communication and how the collection photograph project transformed its appearance. Although the exhibition and program dates are now incorrect, check out the photos and stories in the Spring 2020 members’ magazine. The Goldstein sisters studied with pioneering educator Frank Parsons at the New York School of Fine and Applied Arts (now the Parsons School of Design).

McElvain says that the museum’s collection, which is dependent on donations, is still made up largely of objects that would fit into the original categories of textiles and domestic art objects favored by the Goldstein sisters. She cites haute couture dresses and examples of 19th-century Rookwood art pottery. “But we also look toward product design and industrial design” she adds, noting that the collection contains well-designed telephones, representative Sony Walkman examples and iPads. The museum has received other NEH grants that have supported the preservation of its world dress collection. In 2007 and 2009, Preservation Assistance Grants funded an initial assessment of GMD’s holdings as well as the purchase of metal cabinets to rehouse main garments. Additional Preservation Assistance Grants in 2010 and 2015, as well as a NEH Sustaining Cultural Heritage Collections planning grant in 2013, supported other museum projects.

Their leadership helped shape design education at the University for decades and set the direction for the College of Design. Goldstein Museum of Design is named in honor of two sisters who changed the way Americans value design. Harriet and Vetta Goldstein taught Related Arts in the School of Home Economics at the University of Minnesota from 1910 until 1949, introducing students to the new idea of design harmony and the process of formal analysis to solve design problems. In 2016, Goldstein announced that the home would be donated to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) upon his death. The donation includes almost everything in the house including the furniture and art. It is one of the most culturally and architecturally important homes in the area.

It was originally built between 1961 and 1963 by famed architect John Lautner, who was one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s protegees. Made from poured-in-place concrete, steel, and wood, the 4500 square foot house has five bedrooms and four and a half bathrooms. The James Goldstein house was in a state of disrepair when the businessman purchased it in 1972 for $185,001. The Sheats-Goldstein house is located in the Beverly Crest neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, just up the hill from the Beverly Hills city limit. Due to its location, the house offers amazing views of the city, but is also very secluded.

The schedule of activations and parties will appeal to football fans and architecture aficionados alike (along with top-level executives and celebrities) who may be priced out of the tickets to the game itself. While this is an incredible amount of effort, it's also what makes attending an event a true once-in-a-lifetime experience. Spencer and his business partner Michael Heller currently consult officially with the iconic home, managing the space for high-end brand activations, organizing exclusive events and photoshoots. The Jackie Treehorn house from The Big Lebowski is, in fact, the Sheats-Goldstein residence, owned by elusive businessman James Goldstein.

Goldstein Museum of Design and its collection

Thanks in part to the NEH, the Goldstein Museum of Design continues to support the preservation, safe storage, and easy access of this important collection and others related to fashion, textiles, and the decorative arts. The Goldstein Museum of Design supports object-based learning through a wide range of digital engagement. We are dedicated to bringing Minnesota’s design museum to your (virtual) door.

This includes nearly 1800 hats and 1000 pairs of shoes and boots, as well as a wide range of other fashion accessories such as purses, gloves, and fans. This collection offers a unique insight into the history and evolution of fashion and design. The Goldstein Museum of Design boasts a collection of around 34,000 objects.

This 1963-built mansion is an architectural gem and one of Hollywood’s best-kept secrets. And we’re here to tell you everything there is to know about the Selling Sunset-featured property where the Oppenheim group celebrated their 10th anniversary. With a unique design by American architect John Lautner, and a touch of glam by owner James Goldstein, this futuristic mansion is an iconic Hollywood landmark – and a popular hangout spot for celebs. The Goldstein Museum of Design is named in honor of two sisters, Harriet and Vetta Goldstein, who changed the way Americans value design. Goldstein Museum of Design will be a vital center for design learning that inspires problem-solving discovery, scholarship, and creativity across campus. As the only design museum in the Upper Midwest, the Goldstein Museum of Design seeks to elevate design by generating awareness, promoting understanding, and sustaining its value for generations to come—carrying on the legacy of Harriet and Vetta Goldstein.

A select number of costumes are haute couture, including designs by Christian Dior, Elsa Schiaparelli, Coco Chanel, and Yves Saint Laurent. Los Angeles County Museum of Art Director Michael Govan may be at the helm of an ambitious — and controversial — building project for the museum’s collection of 152,000-plus objects, but his views on what expansion means for art museums in modern times is more, well, expansive. Which explains a recent announcement that LACMA is partnering with the upcoming Las Vegas Museum of Art to share both expertise and, eventually, its collection. Our social media team created a number of ways for you to enjoy design (and interact with design) from the comfort of home. If you are surprised to learn that GMD’s collection contains over 35,000 objects, activities on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram will introduce you to a number of them. Original campaigns include fabulous apparel for #fashioninthetimeofzoom, a detail challenge with #whatisitwednesday, and the ever-popular designer birthdays.

In the meantime, the residence is available for rent for photoshoots, and we’re willing to bet we’ll be seeing more of it in upcoming movies, TV shows, and music videos. The rapper was reportedly impressed and fascinated with the architecture of the Sheats-Goldstein house, and wanted to do something similar with his $57 million new home. The other striking property in the movie is Lebowski’s opulent mansion, which is actually another popular filming location, namely the Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills. This is where movies like The Social Network, Eraserhead, The Witches of Eastwick, The Prestige, and X-Men were filmed. Various Hollywood movies and TV shows were filmed at the Sheats-Goldstein residence, including the now-iconic The Big Lebowski.

In 2011, GMD awarded its annual Joss Internship to MFA graduate student Jessica Barness, who devised a project that meticulously mined the contents of Emigre to create an online index for the publication. Take a virtual gallery tour, download our collection coloring book, and find other options for fun activities to do at home. Discover the breadth and depth of the Goldstein Museum of Design’s collection by attending receptions and other activities related to exhibitions, as well as lectures, gallery talks, panel discussions, and book signings. The Goldstein Museum of Design has many opportunities for faculty, students, and higher education institutions to connect and engage with its collection and exhibitions. Govan and Wynn Resorts co-founder Elaine Wynn sit on both the Vegas museum and LACMA boards.

It’s located in L.A.’s Beverly Crest neighborhood and it’s a private property. Unfortunately, the Sheats-Goldstein house is a private property, so it’s not open to the public. Exclusive parties and events are held at Club James round the clock; Rihanna celebrated her 27th birthday party here, with Jay Z, Mick Jagger, and Leo DiCaprio in attendance. The house has also served as a setting for fashion ads and commercials, glamorous events, and, well, porn flicks. James Goldstein entrusted the home, its surrounding estate, as well as a 1961 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud and his eclectic wardrobe to the museum. This way, his and Lautner’s legacy will continue to inspire and attract curious minds and aspiring architects and designers.
